Concert on 25 May – Mary McPartlan and The Dark Horse on the Wind

A unique national tour featuring renowned singer Mary McPartlan will visit 10 counties this May, coming to Kilcummin Parish Church, Oughterard on Tuesday 25 May at 8pm. The Leitrim-born singer is joining forces with multi-instrumentalist and singer Rick Epping, and guitarist Aidan Brennan to perform a gloriously earthy mix of trad, folk and blues. This national tour is being organised by arts and community development organisation Rural Arts Network, and uachtarARTS Oughterard Community Arts Group has been invited to host the event in the west of Ireland. Everyone is very welcome to attend. €8 admission (€5 concession).

uachtarARTS Festival is a resounding success

Colourful and fun with something for everyone, the fifth uachtarARTS Festival saw Oughterard come alive with creativity! The festival got off to a flying start with the launch of three community art exhibitions in the Tourist Office and then continued with a beautiful concert in Kilcummin Parish Church. The weekend was packed with workshops for all ages, performances to beat the band, and fascinating talks and walks, not to mention a popular treasure hunt. The festivities finished off on a high note in the Shrubbery with a showcase of newly learnt skills including sean-nós dancing, drumming, violin playing and making music from recycled instruments, as well as a performance by Spraoi, Oughterard’s youth circus. Much fun was had by all at the various photo boards dotted around the town, while the stunning gigantic wind chime installations in the Shrubbery were a feast for the ears and the eyes!

The Festival was organised by uachtarARTS Oughterard Community Arts Group in collaboration with Clann Resource Centre, and was funded by the Arts Council, the VEC and Galway County Council, with support from local businesses.

A huge thank you to everyone – facilitators, volunteers, the community, and local organisations and businesses – for making the festival such a success. Without your support and enthusiasm it wouldn’t be possible to run an event like this. If you have any comments or ideas for future arts events, or would like to get involved, please contact uachtararts@hotmail.com or 091 557633.

FESTIVAL LAUNCH WITH LOUIS DE PAOR, RONAN BROWNE AND KATHLEEN FUREY
The promotion of the Festival got off to a flying start with a magical evening of poetry, music and art by Louis de Paor, Ronan Browne and Kathleen Furey in the Boat Inn on Sunday 7 March. Louis’ fluid poetry was perfectly complemented by Ronan’s hauntingly beautiful playing on the uilleann pipes and Kathleen Furey’s images of loss and separation. A big thank you to everyone who participated and to Joe Walsh for the use of the Boat Inn as our venue.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

uachtarARTS’ debut appearance at the St. Patrick’s Day parade was a colourful and eclectic affair! With the aim of promoting the Festival, the float offered a wonderful combination of drumming, dancing, singing, photography and a moving festival tent carried by four artists! Thank you to Louise Browne, Ben & Roisin Byrne, Ógras Leim/Uachtar Ard, Susanne Keane, Bernie Welby and everyone else who helped out.
