There are lots of ways to get here from there!

By Rail 

There is a good network of railway throughout Ireland and the rates are best when booked on the Irish Rail - Iarnród Éireann website.

By Bus 

There are several bus companies running routes throughout Ireland so it is best to shop around for rates and timetables that suit you. There are also lots of bus hire companies and those running special tours.

By Car

Oughterard is easily accessible by car from any location in Ireland. Oughterard is located on the main N59 road, west of Galway City. Galway City is well-connected to the country's major road networks and the journey from Galway City takes appx 35 minutes.

With large car-hire depots at the airports (check the individual airport websites) and with depots in Galway City there are different ways to create the perfect journey. Below are the car hire companies with depots in Galway City.

By Air

 

Shannon International Airport is the main international airport in the west but Knock International Airport is adding new routes all the time. Dublin International Airport would be the largest international airport in the country but is the furthest drive from Oughterard. Galway Airport is the closest airport to Oughterard and services only UK and European destinations.

Galway Airport is the closest airport to Oughterard and services destinations in Ireland, UK & Europe. Oughterard to the Galway Airport door will take appx 45 mins depending on traffic.

Knock International Airport

Knock Airport is in Mayo and is a bit further out but is currently growing and adding new flights all the time. Oughterard to the Knock Airport door will take appx 1 1/2 hours depending on traffic.

Shannon International Airport

Shannon is perhaps the most well-known airport in the West of Ireland because of its frequent flights to and from North America. Oughterard to the Shannon Airport door will take appx 2 hours depending on traffic.

Dublin International Airport

Dublin Airport is on the East coast of Ireland but with the new motorway, it can be accessed from Oughterard in just over 3 hours.

By Sea

There are several Ferry companies which allow you to visit Oughterard with your car. Many of them dock off Dublin, Cork & Wexford. They also have other routes throughout Europe.

  • Irish Ferries travel between Ireland and England & France
  • Direct Ferries travel between Ireland & England, Scotland, Wales, France and Isle of Man
  • Stena Line travel between Ireland and England & France
